I have come across these lines a few times – either in a book, movie or in real life. Lines such as “No self respecting person would tolerate that”/”Oh man, when they said that… my self esteem took a hit”/”He has poor self image ..” etc.
This brings us to a very important question. What is common to self respect, self esteem, self image? The word “self”.
This brings me to a fundamental question. If someone has no sense of self, how can they have self respect, self image, self esteem etc? The inquiry for today is – do I have a sense of my self, do I know who I am?
Self is defined as a person’s essential being that distinguishes them from others, especially considered as the object of introspection or reflexive action, per Dictionary.com.
Let me tell you how I define my self.
1/If I stand for nothing, I fall for everything – So, what is at the very core of my self? Respect – I like to give respect to everyone age 1 to 100. I also like to receive respect from everyone from age 1 – 100.
2/Trust is like a porcelain vase. Once cracked it is hard to repair. I am very trustworthy and get put off by people who lie to me. It does not align with my value system.
3/If it is meant to be it will be. There was a point in time, when I used to get very disappointed if things did not go the way I wanted. I have matured and now trust the Universe to do its job. I feel lighter and much happier.
Perhaps you can come up with your own matrix for your sense of self aka value system that can also act as your decision framework. If you are confused about a decision, slice it down to its atomic level. The value that you find, will help you come up with the correct decision. Try it, it works 100% of the time.
